Doppelgänger in the Mirror : Solving Linear Equations With Variables on Both Sides of the Equation
So, where to start? Imagine you are looking at your reflection in a mirror; it is still you, just on the opposite side. Now, if you are the variable (x) in the equation (4x + 6 = 2x + 4). You are now on both sides of the mirror, but you only want to to be on one side. So how exactly do you get there? Thankfully you are taking the easy path to the other side of the mirror, so there are no trolls waiting under bridges to give you a riddle. Well, not yes anyway…
- 4x + 6 = 2x + 4 | Now you move you (x) so that you are one side of the mirror.
- 4x - 2x = 4 - 6 | Now that you’re on the correct side of the mirror, we sort out the things which are still fuzzy between dimensions. Don’t freak out! I am just easing you into a new term we will be using.
- 2x = -2 | Use the mirror effect to divide each side by (2) rather than multiply.
- 2x/2 = -2/2
- x = -1
